The Shallow Well Program in Sub-Saharan Africa
Marion Medical Mission in Marion, IL by Tom Logan
The MMM Shallow Well Program is one in which American volunteers work hand-in-hand with Africans to install shallow wells in remote villages in Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia. Each well costs only $400 and provides a safe, sustainable source of drinking water for a village of approx. 150 people. This program is a self-help program we only provide what the Africans cannot; the pipes, pump, cement, and skilled African labor. Also a community organized maintenance system insures sustainability.
We serve the people of Africa, currently our efforts are focused on the people of Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia.
We installed our very first Shallow Well in 1991. Since then we have installed over 16,225 wells, providing safe drinking water to over 2.4 million people.
