Educating Mali one village at a time

Mali Rising Foundation in Sandy, Utah by Niankoro Samake

Education
About our cause

The proposed project is to assist the village of Kiniero with a three-classroom middle school. The school will enroll 150 students in grades seven through nine from Kiniero. Kiniero with a population of 3,000 is located in the Mandé region. The Mandé district is one of the least developed regions of the country. The distance to the nearest middle school in the town of Siby is 17 km or 10 miles. Unpaved trails means a child walking 3 hours one way. Safety and time make education a deterrent here.

What population we serve?

The middle school children of the rural population of Mali, West Africa, where children sometimes have to walk 3-5 miles 4 times a day.

What success we've already had

In a country where only 46% of the population is literate, Mali needs schools, especially in the impoverished rural regions. To date Mali Rising has successfully built 12 middle schools and 1 primary school in the rural regions of Mali, West Africa, enrolling 946 female and 1,292 male students. Two more middle schools are planned so far for 2012.

Our primary mission
Mali Rising Foundation(MRF) organization was established in 2004 to create educational opportunities for children in rural Mali. We focus on rural areas because of the challenges in these communities including extreme poverty, and scarce resources.

Why should you support our cause

This school when built has the capacity to transform the lives of hundreds of children and change the social landscape of an impoverished community.

How the money will be spent

The budget for this project is $50,000. The money will build and equip a 3 classroom middle school. Villagers would contribute 20% of the cost and the land while the government provides teachers, making the school self sustainable and the responsibility of the village to maintain.
