The more kids know, the more they grow: Veggies that is!
Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids, Inc. in Hockessin, DE by Barbara Boyce
Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids works with public elementary schools to plant, grow, and harvest vegetable gardens in the spring and fall each school year that fits in with the science curriculum for each grade. This grant will allow HFHK to conduct more cooking demos and possibly purchse additional cooking carts for the schools so that more children can experience the joy of eating and preparing garden-fresh veggies.
Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids, Inc. currently serves 17 public elementary schools and 1 middle school in Delaware, reaching about 7,500 students.
Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids started with 2 schools in 2008 and has added schools every year. They currently work with 18 public schools, including the Delaware School for the Deaf. HFHK models the garden lessons for the teachers the first year. After that, the gardening program is almost completely self-sufficient.
