About our cause

During a needs assessment trip to Haiti in January 2010, Founder and Executive Director Danielle Butin, MPH, OTR, saw the enormous need for rehabilitative therapy and products for victims disabled as a result of the earthquake. She established a two-pronged sustainable program: training Haitians to become Rehab Techs or Adaptive Builders. The team works together to assess needs and implements a plan of care, including individualized products, that promotes independence.

What population we serve?

Since March 2010, Afya’s Haitian Team has visited over 65 tented cities to assess, identify and/or treat over 1500 individuals with disabilities. Additionally, there is a high prevalence of children with disabilities as a result of birth related incidents. For the first time, parents of these children are actively seeking out care and individualized products from the Haitian team.

What success we've already had

The Afya Foundation has trained and employed 23 staff members in Haiti. Over 1500 people have been assessed and treated. We operate 4 clinics in Haiti, and have visited over 65 camps to find those in need of care. Afya maintains a workshop where products are created and distributed to the disabled.

Our primary mission
The primary mission of The Afya Foundation’s “Rehabilitation Program” is to provide education and training to Haitians in order for them to become the first generation of rehab providers for their countrymen and women, disabled by the January 12, 2024 earthquake.
Why should you support our cause

There is an opportunity here to establish a national template for case finding, delivery of rehab care, services and products in Haiti.

How the money will be spent

The Rehab Project has enabled thousands of patients to receive care while providing education, training and work for local Haitians. Some of the most under-resourced camps have requested our help with rehab services. The additional funds would be used to expand our program and bring more trained rehab providers and supplies to those in need.
